First American pope: On Thursday, May 8, 2025, Cardinal Robert Prevost, the 267th Pope, was elected as the first American-born pope. He will be known as Pope Leo XIV. In front of tens of thousands of Catholics, Leo delivered his first speech as pope from the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica, pleading for peace with the words "Peace be with you all" and honored the late Pope Francis.
Concerning the new pope: Leo is a 69-year-old Chicagoan leader with international experience. He had dual citizenship in the US and Peru, where he was a bishop, and he worked mostly as a missionary in South America. Most recently, he oversaw a strong Vatican office that appointed bishops. He is anticipated to expand on the changes implemented by Pope Francis.
Reaction throughout the world: World leaders congratulated the pope on his election and said they were excited to collaborate with him on international challenges. The historic choice was hailed as a national honor by US President Donald Trump.
