Christian Couples Advised to Shun Divorce

Mr Pat Odihi, President of the Plateau Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship International (FGBMFI), has advised Christian couples against divorce.

Odihi stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Jos.

He was a Guest Speaker at a Couples’ Dinner organised by the Living Faith Church (LFC) on Sunday.

Odihi said that Christian marriages as ordained by God did not envisage divorce.

He described marriage as one of the first miracles that God did when he extracted Eve from Adam and Adam loved the woman.

Odihi said that a Christian marriage did not envisage divorce.

He said, “A man needs to cleave to just one woman as a life partner and not what presently takes place among some Christians, who separate after marriage.’’

Odihi condemned the trend divorce, which he described as the greatest challenge to Christianity.

He said that most Christian couples no longer obeyed the sacred vows they took which was “for better or for worse “.

Odihi said some Christian couples equated the sacred vows to marriages done under native laws and traditions which encouraged divorce.

He urged Christians to follow God’s method of marriage in the Bible which encouraged conscious efforts in following biblical instructions.

Odihi said the book of Ephesians 5:21- 29, urged Christian couples to learn the act of submission to one another and for the husband to cherish his wife in marriage and not to beat her to submission.

According to him, the husband is also expected to serve as the priest over the family, leading it in prayers for cohesion.

Odihi, who had 45 years experience of marriage to his only spouse, urged men who depended on their wives as bread winners to also make the family work.

“When your wife becomes the bread winner, there should be some adjustments.

“The man should help with some household chores which range from cooking to taking care of the children, “ he said.
Odihi said that while passing through the experience, a man should also pray to God to change his situation.

He cited Proverbs 31:10 and urged women to support their husband when passing through hard times as “the neck that carries the head“ in Christian marriage.

NAN reports that no fewer than 50 couples from different Christian denominations attended the dinner on Sunday.

The dinner was a follow-up to the “Covenant Day of Fruitfulness“ held by the church earlier in the day and presided over by the Resident Pastor, Mr Joseph Yadung. (NAN)
