Key Scripture: But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. John 16:13
I have often heard Christians talk of “being led by the Spirit”, and what they mean is that the Spirit tells them to talk to this person about Christ, or take this particular job, or buy that home, or say a particular thing at a particular moment. In other words, it seems that the generally held view of “being led by the Spirit” is that a believer receives supernatural or mystical revelation to make correct decisions in life.
“What does it mean to be led by the Spirit?” According to Paul’s use of that phrase in Romans 8:12-14, to be led by the Spirit, means you are growing in holiness. In Paul’s understanding, it has nothing to do with supernatural or mystical revelation, but everything to do with personal holiness.
A believer who is not actively involved in resisting evil and obviously seeking to do good is not being led by the Spirit, no matter how much he may think he is “surrendered.” The faithful believer is not an observer but “a good soldier of Christ Jesus” who is engaged in the “active service” of his Lord (2 Tim. 2:23–4). Believers do not need to pray for the Spirit’s leading, because He is already doing that. They need to seek for willingness and obedience to follow His leading.
The Holy Spirit does such awesome, yet practical work in the lives of God's children. He is our Comforter, Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener and Standby. He teaches us and guides us into truth…and He even brings the things we learn back to our remembrance as we need it. To be led by the Holy Spirit just means to be obedient to Him.
In our relationship with God, our part is to pray, study His Word and learn to develop our own sensitivity and obedience to the Holy Spirit's lead. His promise to us is, "I will give us one heart and I will put a new spirit within us. And I will take the stony heart out of our flesh, and will give us a heart of flesh." (Ezekiel 11:19, MEV).
Trust the Holy Spirit and follow His lead. Don't Brain-storm, Spirit- Storm
