Apple

For the Newbies, Greens is a new column on Topmost Blog, just to spice things up and discuss on topics other than Christian News & Inspirational Messages. Natural fruits, vegetables & green smoothies are good for you. You can check out the previous post HERE

Today's topic is APPLE. Apples are one of the healthiest foods a person can eat. They are high in fiber and vitamin C, and they are also low in calories, have only a trace of sodium, and no fat or cholesterol.

"Apples are high in polyphenols, which function as antioxidants,” said Laura Flores, a nutritionist based in San Diego. “These polyphenols are found in both the skin of the apples as well as in the meat'', almost half of an apple's vitamin C content is just under the skin, so to get the greatest amount of benefits, eat the skin of the apple."  Apples contain insoluble fiber, which provides bulk in the intestinal tract. The bulk holds water that cleanses and moves food quickly through the digestive system.

According to Flores, "Regular intake of apples has been shown to have cardiovascular benefits. This is due to two properties of apples: the fiber that they contain and the polyphenols that are found in high amounts."

Apple seeds will pass through your digestive system relatively untouched, but if you chew the seeds you may be exposed to the toxins. One or two will not be harmful, as the body can handle small doses of cyanide, but if you or a child chews and swallows a lot of seeds, you should seek medical attention immediately. A very large helping of apple seeds may be fatal.

There are many fruits in the world, then why an apple? Apples provide major benefits to the human body, they contain fructose which are natural sugars, far better for your body than the processed sugars you take and has the ability to keep the body awake and keep you going.

Apples are nutritious, a medium apple is equal to 1.5 cups of fruit.

Apples contain antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds that may help regulate immune responses and protect against diseases.

According to animal studies, apple juice may help prevent the decline of neurotransmitters that are involved in memory.

Apples do not contain caffeine, not even a little bit like most claim, they contain 13.81g of carbohydrates, 10.3g 0f sugars and fiber content of 2.4g while coffee contains about 95mg of caffeine.

It is good for you to also know that fructose in apples can also provide jolts of energy when compared to coffee. Sounds weird right? No, it doesn't have to, remember than they contain carbohydrates which is used to fuel the body and due to the high fiber content, the body ingest the sugar step by step. So despite the high level of sugar, eating an apple is far more healthier than drinking a cup of coffee. The sugars are the main reason apples have similar outcome to the caffeine embedded in coffee.

Now you know that apples do not only keep doctors away but can also supply a better morning wake-up. The apple may not totally replace your regular coffee procedures but it offers a better alternative to staying awake. So before you drink that cup of coffee in your hand, just remember that an apple is a better wake-me-up plus keep-me-awake, and is more effective and healthier.
