Two Hospitalized After Car Crashes Into Culver City Church

A driver and passenger were injured when a car crashed into a church in Culver City early Wednesday morning and landed on its side, police said. Around 1 a.m., the vehicle lost control, jumped the curb and went into Seventh-Day Adventist Church, which is located in the 11800 block of Washington Boulevard, according to Lt. Dunlap of the Culver City Police Department.

The passenger, a man in his 20s, had to be extricated from the car with the Jaws of Life, Dunlap said. He was taken to a hospital where he underwent surgery on his head and arm.

His current condition was not immediately known.

The driver, also a man in his 20s, was taken to a hospital for evaluation and last reported to be in fair condition.

Authorities were investigating the possibility that the vehicle was racing another car at the time, according to Dunlap. He added it was unclear how fast the car was going when the collision occurred.

The lieutenant said the driver was also being investigated for possible DUI.

The pastor's office, another office and part of a restroom were damaged, according to Callie Williams, the church's assistant pastor.

He said the collision marked the fourth time a car has crashed into the church.

The building has been red-tagged, according to Dunlap.
